How to Find SSL Secured Website?

The online users are not much cognizant of the technical terms and the meaning of online security. Each one of us uses the internet for something or the other. So it will be a great help if the users are educated about online security basics. In this write-up, let us learn how to identify if a website is protected or not.

Steps to find Website is SSL Secured or not

  • The green address bar: An SSL enabled website will always show a green address bar. All the websites that have a GeoTrust SSL certificates or any other credible SSL implemented will have a green address bar. Such websites are completely safe to share sensitive information.
  • Normal address bar: Such websites are not protected with SSL certificate. If you have to share any confidential information then please do not do on such websites.
  • Https and HTTP: The websites with https offer another level of security. If you want to check that, then erase HTTP and type https instead and hit enter if it works then it is https enabled else it is not.
  • Red warning signal: Sometimes you might have come across a website that will not open instantly. The browser will show warning pop up with the option to “proceed anyway” this is an unprotected website. All the data that you will enter in here will not be encrypted. And can be easily viewed by an unauthorized third party.

These are some of the few things that can help a website user to identify a secure and an insecure website. Even after implementing GeoTrust SSL certificates and other credible SSL certificates cyber threats like phishing are still active. They trick the certificate authorities to issue them a valid certificate thus making them look legitimate. A phishing website looks completely safe and secure and passes all the checks stated above. We can just hope that in the coming years CA will come with a new solution for these cyber threats too.
